Travel to School

The Government plans to boost walking, cycling and bus travel to school and tackle congestion around the school run. The new action plan for travelling to school will help schools to promote safe and healthy travel.
Recent surveys on a typical week in September of how school children are travelling to school in Bracknell Forest showed that 51% of primary, infant and junior school children and 71% of secondary school children surveyed walked, cycled or used public transport to travel to school.
During Walk to School Week (6 -10 October 2003) the number of Primary, Infant and Junior school children walking, cycling or using public transport to travel to school increased to 58.3%. All pupils received a sticker for every day of the week they walked or cycled to school and were rewarded with a badge at the end of the week if they walked or cycled every day.
In order to increase the number of school children walking, cycling or using public transport to travel to school throughout the year, Bracknell Forest Borough Council is encouraging schools to produce School Travel Plans.
A School Travel Plan puts forward a package of measures to improve safety and reduce car use, backed up by a partnership between the school and education and transport officers from the local authority. It is based on consultation with teachers, parents, pupils and governors.
There are many schools in Bracknell Forest that have already decided to produce a School Travel Plan. These schools are looking at introducing walking buses, integrating sustainable transport issues into the curriculum, and promoting walk to school days. These measures will all contribute to reducing the congestion, pollution and danger outside the school.
In the new year we will send you further information on financial grants available for schools with approved travel plans.

Brompton Bicycle Safety

1. Before riding, see that the seat pillar clamp is properly secured, and that the hinge clamp levers are firmly screwed up.
2. Carrying the Brompton: it is obviously less critical that the bike is correctly folded than assembled, but bear in mind that, if the machine has not been properly locked together, unexpected unfolding of the folded package, for instance on a staircase or lifting it off a luggage rack, could cause injury.
3. Do NOT try to alter the height of the handlebar stem where it enters the front forks.
4. Keep the gears properly adjusted, and brakes and control cables in good condition. Running adjustments should be carried out.
5. During folding and unfolding, avoid putting your hands anywhere that they may be trapped.
6. High mileage and hard riding: aluminium alloy is used on the Brompton and this has a limited fatigue life. Failure in use can cause injury. regarding routine replacements of ALLOY components of the bike.
7. The Brompton is for use on roads and well made paths. It is not designed for cross country riding: this can overstress the frame, and anyway the tyres and wheels are quite unsuitable.
8. When riding on fine grit, or on wet surfaces, the 16″ tyres have less grip: wet metal (such as a man-hole cover) is particularly slippery. Also, in rain the brakes may be less effective. Take due care.
9. Use lights, front and rear, when riding after dark.
